Melvin Peters Quartett aus Südafrika: Vier der besten Jazzmusiker aus Durban spielen in der Kulturkirche St. Stephani. Sie haben ein breites Repertoire und spielen neben modernem Jazz insbesondere typisch südafrikanischen Jazz.

Die Musiker haben insbesondere Verbindungen zur Universität KwaZulu Natal, wo sie entweder studiert oder auch gelehrt haben. Melvin Peters, Bandleader und Pianist, studierte u. a. bei Darius Brubeck und erlangte 1989 den Master of Jazz music. Saxofonist Jeff Robinson war hauptamtlicher Professor und Lehrer und gibt bis heute Kurse an der Universität. Bassist Bongani Sokhela ist in zahlreichen Projekten engagiert, insbesondere aber involviert in Theaterproduktionen. Bruce Baker ist Privatdozent an der Universität KwaZulu Natal. Er zählt zu Südafrikas besten Schlagzeugern.

Mit dem Afrika-Schwerpunkt der jazzahead! 2024 verbindet die Kulturkirche St. Stephani die Clubnight gleichzeitig mit dem Austausch zwischen den beiden Partner- und Hafenstädten Bremen und Durban/Südafrika. Seit rund 10 Jahren ist die Zusammenarbeit mit dem südafrikanischen Jazzmusiker Melvin Peters sehr fruchtbar. Diesmal bringt er seine Band mit. Es ist ihr erster Auftritt in Deutschland und Europa.

Melvin Peters Quartet from South Africa: Four of Durban´s finest Jazz musicians will perform at the Kulturkirche St. Stephani. They have a wide repertoire with modern jazz and a special focus on typical South African Jazz.

The musicians have an attachment to the University of KwaZulu-Natal and at some point in their careers have either studied or taught at this institution. Melvin Peters, who leads the group on piano, studied under the tutelage of Darius Brubeck in the early eighties and graduated with a Master of Music degree in 1989. The saxophone player, Dr Jeff Robinson, is a retired professor; however he continues to lecture part-time at the Univerity of KwaZulu Natal in the field of Music Education. Bass-player Bongani Sokhela is presently engaged in several projects, especially in theatre-productions. Bruce Baker is currently the drum tutor at the University of KwaZulu Natal and one the best drummers in Southafrica.

Within the scope of Africa of jazzahead! 2024 the Kulturkirche St. Stephani links it with the musically excgange between the two twin-cities and seaports Bremen and Durban in Southafrica. Over more than 10 years the collaboration with the southafrican Jazz-musician Melvin Peters is exceedingly fruitable. This time he brings his band with him. This is their first performance in Germany and Europe.
